Low Back Injuries

Low Back Injuries

Low back injuries are caused by muscle strain, disc problems, degenerative joint disease and of course subluxation, which is the lack of movement of a joint.  We can also injure ourselves by having postural imbalances, wearing improper footwear, poor sleeping surfaces and by lifting improperly.  However, the leading cause of back pain is muscle strain and that happens over a long period of time.

When muscles contract a substance called lactic acid builds up as the by product of muscle activity.  The increased lactic acid is what causes muscles to be sore.   Higher than normal levels of lactic acid in the muscle following strenuous exercise can cause irritation to tissue.  Strenuous muscle activity, which is involved in some occupations, can cause a chemical irritation in the tissue that leads to the sensation of pain.  There could be a sudden onset of pain with a debilitating condition resulting for the person.  Moreover, these symptoms are worsened by dehydration, as there is no fluid to wash away the lactic acid and bring in nutrients to the joints.  Furthermore, a person low in nutrients like Calcium, Potassium and Magnesium will suffer from cramps in their muscles more readily.

Therefore, the best way to avoid these situations and remain healthy is through proper diet and exercise. To begin with a person should drink half their weight in ounces of water per day. They also should take a multi vitamin and mineral supplement.  Supplements that can help are B Complex, Magnesium, Manganese, Glucosamine and Bioflavonoids.

Also, Chiropractic adjustments can restore lubrication and hydration to painful joints. Hydrating a joint after injury is the fastest way to healing because hydration brings in the nutrients the joint needs to be healthy. That is why Chiropractic is effective in the treatment of neuromusculoskeletal injuries.
